Jen with CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman, Prescott AZ 2008
What if Coach Glassman’s description of a community where everyone does CrossFit became real? Wouldn’t Tucson be a better place if there was a CrossFit on every corner? What if Tucson’s supermarkets replaced all those middle aisles of crappy food with real food because Tucsonans all ate Paleo? What if everywhere you went- the movies, the schools, your office, the mall-people were talking about “Fran”? What if we erased Type II diabetes in Tucson because of CrossFit and Paleo-eating? OK-that might be a little bit too fantastical, but Tucson is inching in that direction, slowly but surely. CrossFit Works would like to welcome Tucson’s two newest Affiliates into the world-changing process. Wildcat CrossFit and CrossFit Purgatory are both on Speedway just a few miles from each other. It has been exciting to witness the gradual transformation of Wildcat CrossFit from a traditional personal training venue into a crossfit affiliate. I know you will encounter good nutrition suggestions at Wildcat because two of their trainers were my students! The crew at Wildcat are incredibly kind and they have a really good parking lot for a CrossFit Throwdown…
The crew at CrossFit Purgatory is also well known to us since we have spent the last year training them! If you have been in one of our recent On-Ramps you know Matt T., one of Purgatory’s trainers, because he was our Apprentice trainer. It has been very cool to see Matt get his feet wet teaching crossfit to folks and we wish him well as he continues on as a CrossFit trainer. Tony, Marcy and Matt we welcome you guys to the world of CrossFit Affiliates and wish you all the best as you get the wheels rolling and begin coaching crossfitters!

Okay this is so way cool. So many economic terms come to mind. First is ‘real vs nominal’ as applied somewhat loosely to health care reform. CrossFit is real health care reform. See Jen’s reference to tackling Type II diabetes. Another is competition. Are Wildcat and Purgatory competing with CF Works? Kinda, but in what ways? Another important idea is whether crossfit coaching services are considered substitute (this INSTEAD of that) or complementary goods (this AND that). If I’m right that crossfit coaching services are complementary by gym, then an increase in quantity demanded at Gym A will increase demanded at Gym B in an expanding market, along the lines of the output effect being greater than the substitution effect in factor markets. Theory translation: this is good.
Good luck Wildcat, and good luck Tony B. and Matt T. at Purgatory. Okay, Purgatory. What’s in a name? Dante’s Divine Comedy middle 33 Cantos described how souls who died in a state of grace had to undergo major purification before they could enter paradise. For example, sometimes after purification via one of Mateo’s or Jen’s WODs, Midori and I go for a coffee or tea at Paradise Cafe on Park, avoiding those heavenly brownies though, but of course.
Stephen you are too much. Is it the paleo food that hones your brain to such an advanced state? It must be. I agree that it is a good thing and, after spending the last 8 months in hospitals for school, I think the world, and Tucson needs as much crossfit as it can get.
Thanks to you for a kind welcome to the affiliate community. To answer Stephen’s question about competition, I would simply respond that we do not believe that any of the CrossFit affiliates in Tucson are in competition. Our belief at CrossFit Purgatory is that if everyone in Tucson learns about CrossFit, it will only serve to accomplish our real goal, which is to give people a high quality of life at any age. We agree with his translation that “this is good,” and we could have only hoped to have been welcomed into the affiliate community with open arms. The community of CrossFit is not only the community within the walls where we train…it’s whatever we decide to make it. We have been blessed here in Tucson to have several high quality, high caliber CrossFit affiliates to experience and learn from. Thank you again for the welcome and we look forward to seeing all of our friends from CFW as well as friends from NorthWest, Full Throttle in Rita Ranch, and Wildcat at the next Tucson Open!
