“Look at those girls flip the tires!!!”

The judge, laying down the law.

I get all choked up just looking at this picture.

The judge is looking to see that the tallest person breaks parallel.

Shoulder-to-shoulder overhead.

Every time I think about it I smile.  Do you know what sort of circumstances the CrossFit Works’ Team thrives under??  HEAVY SH** MOVED AROUND AS A TEAM!!!  Nothing upon nothing could make me happier.  The third Affiliate Team WOD was designed to require teamwork  instead of just being the culmination of individual performances added together.  It was a 340lb tire flipping, 185lb log-carrying, log squatting, log pressing mash up.  The Team had to strategize who to start with the tires, who to have on the log, how to not put the entire log on the tallest girl (who busted out some superb sumo squats to accommodate her shorter team mates), how to switch most quickly between tire-flippers and log-carriers and how to do it all fast.  With some powerful, on-the-field leadership from Jenny and some seriously fast, efficient tire flipping from Andres and Mateo and some holding-up-more-than-her-share-work from Kate they finished 14th out of the 70 teams!!  What was so cool for me was that we were one of only a small handful of teams that had their women do any tire flipping.  The majority of the other teams had to have their guys lift the log onto the shoulders of the women first, losing them a little time to start the tire flip.  For me to stand in the crowd and hear other spectators exclaiming about Kate and Jenny and their bada** tire flipping made me tear up with joy of course.  Some people tear up when they read Hallmark cards.  I tear up watching Kate and Jenny flip tires.  And then-watching Mateo and Andres turn on the speed for the final leg was super exciting.  They all worked together so well-their whole was more than the sum of the parts which is WAY more of an accomplishment than a tippy little stack of egos.

I’ll get you all some more pics of the weekend in the next few days.

This is a picture of  Chyna Cho, the 4th place finisher (as far as I know) for the Women.  This means Chyna secured herself a spot at the 2010 CrossFit Games in July.  If there were CrossFit sports cards to collect,  I’d collect Chyna.  I took her picture with Freddy Camacho, owner of CrossFit One World just after she learned of her placement.  I’d also collect Jocelyn Forest from CrossFit West Santa Cruz.  You should have seen her do the 20 shoulder to overhead at 115lbs and the 40 lateral jump burpees.  Those are two of my fave women CrossFitters (aside from my home girls).

I was watching the live stream, and when two things indeed stood out. Kate and Jenny tire flipping. And the squats with the log. I had a tear myself. Crossfit Works Team were working as a team, the squats were timed so well, the log when down straight in a fluid motion. All the other teams made the log look like it it was doing the wave. And all I could think was..And Kate is so Tall how are they making that work. GREAT JOB !!

  • Hey Jen, I’ll bring in my laptop today and you can see the snaps and movie clips I have. Will share any you like. Got a decent movie of our teams’s tire-flipping drive. Flippin’ awesome!

I think what made everything so smooth in this event was the leadership, team work and communication of our group. I saw so many other teams break down because of a lack in these categories. This event was soooo exciting to watch!!!

It was an honor to compete with such an amazing team and for such an awesome affiliate. Thank you Jen for being such a wonderful coach. Also thanks to Brian, Janice, Lori, Heather, Steve & Midori for coming out there to support us(Thanks to Eric & Greg too! It was great seeing you guys!). Carl & Bryon for holding down the fort, and to everyone who was supporting from home, we couldn’t of done it without you. It was so much fun and I can’t wait till next year!
