Great Basin Women’s Qualifying Workout #2

One of the things I love about CrossFit’s group workouts is the chance to be absolutely inspired by watching someone else’s workout.  When I am in a rut with my training or losing focus or getting discouraged it can all be fixed by seeing a really huge effort by someone else.  This weekend, in Flagstaff at the Great Basin Qualifying Games, I saw enough inspiring workouts to get me through a long hot Tucson summer.  A very memorable one for me was Veronica Zavala from CrossFit Southwest.  I judged her first which included 95lb power snatches, and second workouts (5 rnds for time of 7 185lb deadlifts, 30 squats, 7 HSPUs).  We introduced ourselves and she told me that the previous week was the first time she had done a snatch that heavy.  I was a little worried for her when I heard that, but for no good reason!  Check out the picture above. Look at that pull!  She got through that workout beautifully.  That is some serious courage to have done that heavy of a snatch once and just take it to the Qualifying Games.  Veronica’s second workout really brought tears to my eyes.  The deadlifts were heavy for her, but she got them up one after the other.  Her first set of HSPUs was head to the ground, lock out at the top, all in one set.  Impressive!  After some more heavy deads and squats her back was hurting her, but she just kept her focus and kept working.  Ultimately, the HSPUs slowed her down so that she was unable to finish the workout in the allotted time, but still she just kept getting to the wall, doing the push up and getting a lot of them done.  It was frustrating for me as her judge watching her be so close to finishing a workout that almost every other woman (even one of the top finishers) had to scale.  I was so impressed by her decision to not scale the workout, but to keep going the way it was Rx’d.  Veronica-I like your style.  Congratulations on an incredible performance.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I loved having you be my judge, you were so personable and you could tell that you really cared about the athletes. Thanks a ton for being such a great judge and for motivating me when I felt like I had nothing left to give. You’re the best!!!

Geesh I want a pull like that. SO cool to see the pics and hear about the weekend. Also cool to hear that someone who scaled the workout still placed. Amazing. Miss everyone, can’t wait to be healthy and kicking some crossfit you know what :) . Nik

Ohhhh… Larry headed over after a 30+ hour shift to the 2:30 today and there was no one there. Poor guy has been depressed ever since. Well, not that you could tell, being that he is Stonewall and all. Hope everything is OK and see you tomorrow night.

    Jennifer -
I was a volunteer for the event and stood in the doorway the first day – you did an amazing job judging – you had some heart-breaking calls to make – especially with Peter. You were a fair, equal, passionate, and compassionate judge! I also workout at CFSW with Veronica and hearing you coach her and support her was terrific. I wish you all the best of luck – though you won’t need luck you have heart!
Thank you for all you did last weekend -
    Trish
