Those Crazy Warm Ups

Good morning.  How about those animal walks?  It is like coordination therapy.  The backwards versions are harder than the workouts.  Last night at the 5:00 we had a guest appearance by Dave Smith and he did a little partner medicine ball work for the warm ups.  It was pretty funny, especially since my partner was more than a foot taller than I am!  As you have experienced we do many things with the warm ups.  Sometimes sets of bodyweight work, sometimes frog hops-you never know.  As you may recall CrossFit believes in ten elements of fitness.  The first five are accuracy, agility. coordination, balance, and flexibility.  Many of you don’t necessarily think of the Olympic Lifts as improving your agility, balance or flexibility-but they absolutely do.  These are pieces of true athleticism.  For years I never considered myself “athletic” because I hated team sports.  Despite the fact that I was a gymnast!  I would have told anyone that “I’m terrible at sports.”  I finally found one I’m pretty decent at-the sport of fitness, CrossFit!  It only took me 35 years…So, think outside the box when it comes to your athleticism and sportiness.  Catching a ball and wearing the team colors isn’t where it begins and ends.  The warm ups, no matter how crazy, will make you a much better athlete.  They are a chance to really work into those five fitness elements.  And, for those of you who struggle with the backwards bear walk, improving your coordination will enhance things like your Olympic Lifts and your kipping pull ups.  Anyway-it is good to feel silly once in awhile.
