Plenty to Celebrate and Olympic Lifting Class

Details first:

This Friday, October 9, at 5:30-6:30 (or maybe 7:00) Dave will host an Olympic Lifting Class.  You must sign up for it in advance because it is limited to six people. Sign-up sheet on the counter or call the gym.   I urge you all to arm wrestle to get a spot in this class.  It is sometimes difficult to focus on improving your OLs during workouts.  Catch-22 though because your workouts will improve dramatically if you improve your lifts.  If you are unable to perform a below parallel OverHead Squat with an empty bar please do not sign up for this class just yet.  Until you have adequate range of motion Dave can’t really help you except to say “Spend more time stretching and working on your squat”.  You don’t have to have shoes like Dave to attend.  Can you imagine if Mr. Rogers had changed out of those every afternoon on PBS?  An entire generation of children traumatized.

Sometimes I have to set aside my preconceived agenda for this blog and CELEBRATE!  Yesterday was packed with impressive achievements.  We conducted our first Saturday PR afternoon session with Dave.  The next one is October 31, sign-up sheet on the counter.  This was a chance to pick your own heart’s desire effort and go for your best.

Jeff T. took us all by surprise and now holds the #1 spot on the record board for the Deadlift at 420lbs!

The lovely Dave Smith Snatched 200lbs.  Must be all that warm milk.

Lest you think that all elite CrossFitters live in CA, we also witnessed “Elizabeth” (21-15-9 Squat Cleans and Ring Dips) performed in 5:38.  If you were to happen to look up other top times for “Elizabeth” you might not find a better one.  We’ll give the credit for this one, by association, to Molly – or we could just give it to Brad himself.

And, in a moment that Carl and I could not stop mentioning way past dinner, John B. did his first muscle-up.  As in, “The best part of the day was John getting that muscle up”.  ”Did you think he was ready to do that?”  ”No, did you?”  ”No.”  ”Man, that was just so cool when John did that muscle-up.”  We see lots of people wistfully swinging from the rings on a daily basis and we have a few people that we run and get the camera because it just might be the day, but John just caught us completely unprepared!  Now, we’ll have to see if it stays with you after you get back from your world travels! (Check out the September 1st post for a great picture of John B. practicing the beginning stages of his Muscle-Up!)

Someone needs to step it up a little because otherwise I’m going to have give this blog a subtitle like: “Chauncey Rules” if you all don’t pick it up.  Chauncey took the #1 spot on the board for the Overhead Squat with 185lbs!!

Andres managed to hold a handstand at the wall for about 4minutes and John W. did an impressive static hang, nearly 3 min I think.

CJ came in and did a 195 Push Press (which I think is only his second or third time ever doing the Push Press) and he brought his Mom from PA.  You all know by now my favorite moments in here are mother-son moments beginning with Midori and Carl. So cool.

We also hosted a very fun partner workout at 2:00 with some hard work by all.  Austin was thoughtful enough to provide his Dad the opportunity to do about a million push presses while Austin was on his Med Ball run.  Summer and Alejandro partnered up for some CrossFit and then later on for some gorgeous bachata dancing.  Watching Summer and Alejandro was great, but I got dance lessons from Rob (meet him in the evening On-Ramp) and Bruce which was pretty fun.  It was a Good Day.

Dang, sounds like it was an awesome Saturday. Trying hard to not feel to sorry for myself, I hate missing out on all the fun- especially when it involves Olympic lifting! At least I will get to see some of you on Wed. for the “extra support” get together, not the same as getting to work out but it will have to do for now!

Hey! I’m still on the board for push press. ;) Why hasn’t anyone else put their max on there? Miss y’all.

  • Jen

Mary-we miss you too! Actually Jenny did one Sat afternoon-135 I think? Are you doing any CF?

  • Summer

When I brought Alejandro in for the workout, he was complaining and cursing me because all he wanted to do was lift weights (yeah, bicep curls and such!). He said crossfit was for little guys. But after the workout he was happy that he participated and really enjoyed it. He’ll be back in March, just so Tony can take his “special” dance class!

Ummm…trying to. They have three “classes” here, one of which is today. I’ll give it a shot, but from what I’ve seen of the equipment, I don’t know that this place has a true affiliate. It’s kind of lame because I saw on the crossfit site a picture from a smaller base here in Afghanistan with an actual affiliate. :(

Tell her to make me #2. :) And then someone else can step in and make me #3. And then, let’s just stop there. LOL.

Ok. There are no more classes. I learned this when I asked a series of Soldiers and Marines (most of which look down on the Air Force in regard to physical prowess) if they were going to crossfit, and they referred me to the P90X class. Gag.

So I decided to practice my deadlift since I saw that there is a deadlift competition on the 17th.

There was about 200 square feet of free space amongst the free weights, so I set up camp, and I totally surprised myself and the dudes curling their dumbells…

I PR-ed with 245 lbs! I had no idea I could do that! I had to bust out a calculator to be sure I was adding up the weight right!

So these guys can suck it! ;)

Where would that have put me on the board, Jen? I know it’s well below you and Jenny, but I can live with that. :)

  • Chauncey

Dang Mary- good job! 245 is great! Take charge over there and set up a crossfit group- I’m sure there are others who are looking to do it.

  • Shannon

245!!!!!!!!!! Good Golly Mrs. Mary, you got some triX up those airforce sleeves! Keep kickN some major CF bootie over there!

…oh and I’m sure you’ve got some sort of ‘app’ on your iphone to help ya with your calculations. ;o

    Wow! Way to go Mary!

I know there was a discussion of nutrition going on a few pages back, as well as some people who had seen the video food inc. This article was published in the NYT a few days ago and its very eye opening. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/04/health/04meat.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1 I just thought there may be some people who would like to read it so im passing it along.

  • Summer

Awesome Mary!! with my crappy DL form I don’t know if I’d ever be at 245. Yeah, and take Chauncey’s advice, you should start your own crossfit group. Do it!!

  • Carl

“CrossFitWorks Afghanistan” has a nice ring to it!

  • Mary Pekas

LOL, would that make us an affiliate to an affiliate? Would you put us on the weekly boards? ;)

  • Carl

Jen is putting your 245 DL on the board next to hers! You are tied with her in the 2nd spot!

  • Mary Pekas

Hot damn! Hopefully I will have photo evidence at the DL contest in two weeks. :)

ALSO, I was perusing Zappos (because I have a lot of time on my hands here…), and look what I found: http://www.zappos.com/dc-chase-xe-black-fluorescent.

I thought Dave colored his shoes in himself…

  • Dave

Haha, it’s ok to admit you want a pair. Go ahead, buy them, all the cool kids do.

  • Mary Pekas

Actually, all the kids wear mango-colored Crocs in the shower. Yeah…this trend is headed west in 5.75 months.
