How do you know if you would be comfortable at CrossFit Works? Are we all crazy weight lifters or fitness freaks? Is it all gorgeous, strong, lean, fast people? Are we friendly? Do we secretly make fun of people who have never worked out before? Are our Trainers only kind and comfortable with the other people just like them? Will you feel silly because you have never touched a barbell? Is our place a hard core weight lifting gym? What if you can’t do any of the things you see people doing in the pictures on the web site? What if you are really shy and terrified of working out?
First of all, I think everyone who trains in this CrossFit Affiliate is beautiful and gorgeous. Some of us have less than 10% body fat, some of us have 65% body fat. Some of us could be on the cover of a magazine. Some are the center of life in a room of people. Some of us are young with all the energy and reserves of a young person. Some of us have silver hair and the wisdom of life. Some of us are in the top few percent of Americans with regard to our fitness levels. Some of us are in the lowest few percent. Some of us have been training and working out since we were kids. Some of us started last week and we are in our 40s.
All of us are friendly, although some of us are shy and introverted. Some of us are sassy. Some of us are pretty good at making people laugh. Some of us, thankfully, are good at that calm, zen approach to life.
Yes, we do hard core weight lifting. Everyone does-even our Grandmas. They are actually the most hard core. There is nothing in any of our workouts that is not absolutely scalable to whatever level of fitness you possess right this moment.
Carl and I (we own this Affiliate, that is me in the picture above with one of our members, Nathan) choose our Trainers based on their technical knowledge and expertise as well as their ability to support every type of person in achieving their individual best. Everyone who works here is genuinely impressed with all our members because we see everyone work hard and improve. We talk about our members, we strategize what would be most helpful for them as individuals and we change what we do each day to best suit you. We look forward to seeing everyone who walks through the door. Most importantly, we do not approach you with a preconceived idea of what you will be like in our gym.
The brilliance of CrossFit is that because it includes all elements of fitness there is something that comes easily to each of you and something that comes more slowly. If you are reading this, not feeling very fit, I can guarantee that there will be something you can do, or some quality you have that gives you a decided advantage in here over some other people who are more fit than you at this moment. Maybe it is your flexibility, maybe it is your determination or perseverance. Maybe it is your ability to make the people around you feel good. Maybe it is your ability to yell the loudest during your deadlifts (don’t worry, you don’t have to yell). I am positive you have a quality right now that will be a great stepping stone on your journey to getting fitter and I bet you have a quality that will support our other members in achieving their goals as well.
Ultimately, if you want to think of a reason that this isn’t the right place for you then you will. The process of changing your life, of getting stronger and healthier is challenging. If you are not ready for that challenge, if you really just want to go along like you have been, then nothing I can say or do can change you.
I will never be able to address each and every one of your excuses. What I can tell you is that we have people here every day, getting fitter and healthier who have: less money than you, less time, more kids, more responsibility, more injuries, more health issues, who weigh more and who have more food issues. There are people in here every day that we support in moving past the things that seem like obstacles to their fitness and, no matter how convinced you are that you have real obstacles for not coming in here and experiencing an increase in your wellness and fitness-there are people who have bigger obstacles who are working through them.
The only thing required for this CrossFit Gym to be the perfect match for you is that you have the ability to see yourself accomplishing things you have never accomplished before. If you don’t have that ability then you might choose a place and a program that will not take you out of your current state of wellness and fitness anytime soon. But I suggest you think of yourself as powerful and you think of us as your support network in tapping into that power. We’d love the opportunity to be that for you.
